What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is a treatment that uses low levels of red light to improve overall skin condition by treating acne, wrinkles, scars, and redness. The treatment is considered quite painless and is highly effective for rejuvenating skin health and providing pain relief.

There is still ongoing research on red light therapy and its effectiveness when in use. The full effectiveness of red light therapy is still yet to be proven but research has shown that the therapy is still emerging and is growing a lot of interest.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red light therapy works by exposing your skin to low levels of red light which targets the skin’s surface and deeper layers. This type of light is not harmful and is used for therapeutic benefits only, improving the recovery of skin cells.

When the light enters your skin, the mitochondria will absorb the light and produce more energy, helping the recovery process of skin cells. Red light therapy uses very low levels of light and heat, preventing it from damaging your skin.

Red Light Therapy Devices

Red light therapy devices come in different forms with some being suitable to use from home. However, the devices used at home can sometimes be less effective than the devices used at clinics and may take longer to work. Red light therapy devices include:

Face Mask

This type of device is designed to fit over your entire face and has red LED lights that are directed towards your skin. A red light therapy mask is best for short-term usage and is advised to be used several times a week. It is highly effective for treating acne, wrinkles, and other facial skin conditions.

Therapy Bed

A red light therapy bed is a device that is designed similarly to a tanning bed but with the use of low red lights rather than UV lights. This is typically found in clinics, and if you are located in Liverpool and looking to use this device, there is no one better than Concordia Clinic.

Red Light Therapy Panel

This is a panel of red LED lights that you can place on either a wall or table and can be used at a clinic or from the comforts of your home. Red light panels range in size from small to large but are both just as effective.

Small red light panels are used to treat very small areas on the body whereas large panels are designed to treat larger areas of the body.

The Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy offers various benefits and is a treatment that continues to develop. While there is still more research to be done on red light therapy but there are several benefits that the therapy has to offer and here are some of its key benefits:

  • Skin Health
  • Pain Relief and Inflammation Reduction
  • Muscle Recovery

Is Red Light Therapy Safe?

In short yes – red light therapy is considered to be a safe form of treatment and side effects are rare and minimal. With the use of low levels of light, the treatment isn’t harsh on the skin compared to the light from the sun or tanning beds. Red light therapy doesn’t use UV light, helping your skin receive natural treatment.

However, if the therapy is misused or isn’t performed according to the advised instructions, there is a chance that your skin could be damaged and won’t fully benefit from the treatment.

At Concordia Clinic, we have a team of qualified therapists who are experienced in providing red light therapy. You can rely on us for safe and effective treatment.

Red Light Therapy FAQs

What do I have to do?

Not much really! When using our red light therapy bed, you strip down to your underwear and lie down… You will have a see-through pillow to rest your head.

We will set the bed up for you, explain to you what will happen, and then show you where to press ‘start’. You’ll then be left to lock the door, get undressed, then start the session.

Once your session has ended, the RLT bed will automatically switch off, you can get up, get dressed, and then make your way to reception.

As the RLT can cause you to sweat due to the stimulation of cells and heat generated by the red light, you will be given a towel to wipe yourself down with.

How long is each session?

Due to the strength of our Red Light Therapy bed, treatments are never more than 12 minutes. Although, to begin with, a session will start at 6-8 minutes. This is to ensure that there is no photosensitivity and to get your body used to such strong cellular stimulation.

Session times will then increase to a maximum of 12 minutes once your body is used to RLT.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends…

For general health and wellbeing

We recommend one or two sessions per week for a week or two, or as and when. With this, patients will feel an increase in energy, improved sleep, and a considerable decrease in inflammatory markers, allowing the natural repair process to take place.

For acute injuries and soft tissue damage

We recommend two to three sessions per week, for two to three weeks. Especially if there is pain involved, as this will rapidly reduce inflammation and swelling so that healing can occur.
Major injuries (or if surgery has been needed) typically require 15-20 sessions over the course of a month to six weeks. A consultation and assessment will determine a more specific treatment plan.

For serious health issues

Serious health issues, such as brain trauma, degenerative disease, dementia (including Alzheimer’s), and MS require a more intense treatment plan. Typically, we recommend three or more sessions per week for a few months, which we can discuss individually and work to your individual needs. Changes may be seen sooner, though more lasting effects will require consistency and persistence.

Can children use the Red Light Therapy bed?

Yes, there are no age restrictions for the use of Red Light Therapy. However, we assess on a case-by-case basis to decide if the child would be comfortable on the red light bed, and we also change the strength of frequencies of the Red Light.

An adult must accompany the child in the room.

Can I use the Red Light Therapy bed if I am pregnant?

Unfortunately not. This is due to a lack of research and understanding of how RLT affects the fetus.

Does RLT burn calories?

Yes – Due to the increase in cellular activity and the increased production of ATP, the body’s metabolism is raised, therefore burning more calories.

However, the amount of calories varies from patient to patient and from session to session depending on duration. Studies have shown that up to 1400 calories have been burned in a single session. This is important to note when taking into account calorie consumption.

Can I have too much RLT?

Yes, just like any other medical intervention, you can overdose on RLT. Although unlike Blue Light (such as UV light), red light will not damage the cells, but it may overstimulate the cells and leave you feeling tired and lethargic.

At Concordia Clinic, all of our RLT operators are trained and skilled in understanding the timings and strengths of red light therapy to prevent this. The risks of overstimulation are extremely low with the protocols that we stick to.

Will I get a tan from Red Light Therapy?

No… The reason our bodies tan is because of the production of melanin within the skin to protect the cells from harmful UV rays (which is the opposite end of the light spectrum).

Because Red Light is not harmful or damaging, the body does not produce melanin as it does not need to protect itself from harmful rays.

So although the RLT bed ‘looks’ like a sun bed, it is not.

What is the difference between a Red Light Therapy bed and an infrared sauna?

A Red Light Therapy bed and Infrared Sauna are both using the red light part of the spectrum, however, both are quite different.

It is important that the body is just a few inches away from the Red Light source in order to gain such benefits, otherwise, the only reaction that the body gets is a generation of Heat (which is what a Sauna is used for).

However, for the cells to be stimulated in a way to produce more ATP and draw in more Oxygen, the Red Light needs to be situated close to the body.

Also, a Red Light Therapy bed has many different frequencies of Red Light, each of which does something slightly different at a slightly different level within the body. This may be to ‘reduce pain’, ‘reduce inflammation’, or ‘promote collagen’. An infrared sauna on the other hand has only the infrared frequencies to generate Heat.
